Description

This Southern Cabbage recipe features tender, flavorful cabbage simmered with onions, garlic, and a hint of apple cider vinegar. Perfect as a comforting side dish, it combines simple ingredients and classic Southern seasoning to bring warmth and depth to your meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids & Fats

  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat fats: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion: Add chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add cabbage: Add chopped cabbage and stir well to coat with the aromatics.
  5. Cook down cabbage: Let the cabbage cook down for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Add broth: Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth to help steam and soften the cabbage.
  7. Season: Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  8. Simmer covered: Cover the skillet and let simmer for 15–20 minutes, until cabbage is tender.
  9. Add vinegar: Uncover, add apple cider vinegar, and stir well to combine.
  10. Reduce liquid: Simmer uncovered for 2–3 more minutes to reduce excess liquid.
  11. Final seasoning: Taste and adjust seasonings as needed before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, use vegetable broth and replace butter with vegan margarine or additional olive oil.
  • You can adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for a milder taste.
  • Serve as a side dish to fried chicken, pork chops, or any Southern-inspired meal.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
